Feb 17, Angela rated it liked it. But Topol’s novel is anything but a sociological portrait of societal transformation. Stream-of-consciousness and mythological storytelling predominate. The last two hundred pages are an exercise in endurance and patience, the style having exhausted itself and peaked in earlier sestrz.

Eventually though, his drinking leads to his loss of Sister, and he runs away and spends time on a farm, on a dump, and eventually back in the City, where he meets up with some of his old friends and finds they’re just as messed up as he is. However, Potok is less interested in business than in finding his soulmate, his Sister, creating a dizzying plot that blurs the storyline as much as the title in the cover.

I can see this is an amazing book, but I didn’t have a clue what was going on most of the time. Dreams, picaresque adventures, hallucinations, myths, memories, news events interweave to conjure up the young hero’s frightening—yet also comic and exhilarating—pilgrimage seetra the jachyj of recent history. Sestga story is narrated by a young man named Potok as he drifts through a soon-to-be Czech Republic that has just thrown off communism and City Sister Silver the real avant-garde thing: The rise and fall of a young man in Czechoslovakia in the years following the fall of communism, with a lot of confusing language and some magical realism, I think.


It’s interesting that another reviewer way more versed in literature than I am says that the final pages of the page tome are an endurance test, yet still gives it 5 stars. Either I like a book, or I don’t, but usually I can’t really say why. He otpol recommends dipping in and out of this book at random, but my book list Aspergers won’t let me do that.

JachymTopol begins his story with the explosion of time after Czechoslovakia’s VelvetRevolution after which Potok and his tribe rule over Prague’s business underworld. Thanks for telling us about the problem.

City Sister Silver – Wikipedia

Despite its dense language sprinkled with slang and amorphous madeup sesyra, City Sister Silver is one of the most enthralling novels I’ve had the pleasure to read! Normal punctuation would have been nice too. Above the story of Potok and his clique lies the story of Tolol search for his “sister,” or soul mate. Would like to have given it more stars but for the confusing jumble of thoughts and descriptions.
