Reading over the 16, I ex;edition something about “taint” rules. Last edited by Darius; at Originally Posted by Libro. Taint can be found here. It’s sort-of being corrupted with evil energy, I think. I’ll need to give Taint a read-over myself as it has been a while since I last saw it.

Heroes of Horror has expanded and revamped rules, which differ slightly from those in Unearthed Arcana which I think are those listed in the SRD link. Taint manifests in one of favenloft major ways, either damage to your psyche as depravity or physically as corruption. If you know the seminal Lovecraftian works casyle protagonists or antagonists succumb to or are the product of taint either by having their minds ablated by the horrors they uncover or come into contact with or by having their bodies warped.

It will likely come into limited play but there are PrC and Feats that require certain levels of Taint to qualify. It mostly to provide atmosphere and allow players and GMs to track the level of exposure to the deleterious effects of things best left alone. Also it can provide some gravitas an tension that augments the horror themes of encounters where players may be more concerned with being corrupted to exposure to some monstrosities than to just being able to soak damage and kill things.
