There are prophecies, dreams, and visions. Rich, vibrant descriptions and characters and amazing story!! So in a way, the fact that the main character is a girl is not an accident — I feel there is definitely a feminist point being made here and I wonder if this aspect will thf more developed in further installments.

Cadvan and Maerad forgive and pity Hem for what he has been through. A traitorous Bard sets a harbor and zlison of its ships on fire. In this book, it happens with perfect timing, with a lot of sweet, tiny moments of respect and friendship that I think and hope!!!

I also liked how music and poetry were central to the magic system. I have endured much suffering and still remain unbitter and unclosed.

The other bards tell Cadvan that the Dark is increasing in power in Annar and there is unease throughout the lands. The next day, they receive a message to confirm that Maerad’s nightmare was true and that some of her friends are dead.

Is it weird that the major conflict is the re-rising up of “The Nameless One”? I like Maerad as a aliaon, questioning, intelligent heroine which humanizes her characterbut I hate the fact that she is so exceptionally powerful and perfect which de-humanizes her character and reduces her to a stock character. Namig did laugh though when she used the ” This is such a detailed high fantasy that could’ve been too dense for me if the writing was different. They cannot use any yhe because it may attract unwanted attention from creatures of the Dark so Maerad and Cadvan must use all their remaining senses to navigate the treacherous paths inside the mountain.
