Magnificent cities like Baghdad on the River Tigris and Damascus in Syria, or Cordoba and Granada in Moorish (Muslim} Spain became renowned cultural centres. Muslim architects created buildings of remarkable beauty, like the Alhambra Palace in Granada and mosques with elegant arches, mosaics and luxuriously patterned ceilings.

At the Court of the Muslim Calpih Harun al Raschid

In Baghdad between 764AD and 869AD, the ruler, Caliph Harun al Raschid possessed a library of six hundred thousand books. Unlike European rulers of the time, who were mostly illiterate, Harun was a fine scholar, well versed in science and philosophy.

The famous collection of stories called The Thousand and One Nights or The Arabian Nights was set against the background of Harun’s court.
