The words “modernism” and “modernist” are used in many disciplines and areas of study, from music to architecture to literary criticism. In the visual arts, however, the word has a specific meaning all its own, one which depends as much on the philosophical intent of the artist as on the specific style of the art object itself.
Generally understood to extend from approximately 1860 to approximately1960, the Modernist era produced many of the artistic movements most challenging to contemporary viewers. These include Impressionism and Post Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism, Geometric Abstraction, Abstract Expressionism and Color Field Painting. All of these seemingly disparate and potentially confusing “isms” can best be put into context if the philosophical underpinnings of Modernism are understood before each movement's formal properties are addressed.
Above all else, the Modernist epoch was one of experimentation and analysis, a period in which art set out to examine its own methods and potentialities. In this way Modernist art directly reflected the dynamic and turbulent social climate that marked the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Within a mere hundred years, Modernism succeeded in redefining the role that art plays within society as a whole, and colors our understanding of art's function today.
